1982 240 Stalls at stop signs and lights 200 1982

Hi,
I have a 1982 240 (120,000 miles) that stalls sometimes when I stop/slow down. However, it always starts right up. I've changed the in tank fuel pump, idle control valve, cleaned the throttle body, and checked the fuel pump relay (seems pretty new with no cracks or burns) and have checked the fuses. I've used two mechanics...neither oif which can seem to find the solution.

These are things I'm now considering...brake booster valve? air mass meter? But..this is getting expensive. Any thoughts?

By the way...sometimes the cart hesitates when I press on the gas pedal also. It's like it doesn't quite kick in and then it starts to move. Definitely feels like it's NOT the transmission. Sometimes, it may even shake before it starts to move. Then it's fine.

Thanks in adavance.

    Hello,

I will assume yours is a K-jet (CIS) with the Constant Idle System. If that is the case, you should check the base idle set-up. You can find this is info in most manuals such as Bentley, Haynes, Volvo green book etc. If your base idle is set to low the idle valve will not have enough correction to bring it back before stall. You have to make sure the base idle is within the proper range. This would be my first step since I have had this problem on my 82.

    Mario

Actually, I just had the idle control valve changed and the idle was adjusted by my mechanic. It seems high enough. Actually...the car was idling much too high before but was still stalling.

What do you all think about the possibility of it being linked to the brake booster? Somehow causing a vacuum leak when I hit the brakes which makes the car stall.

    Hi,

I had a similar problem with my '89 240. It turned out to be the Air Mass Meter in combination with the air box and air cleaner.

You can read all about it here http://www.brickboard.com/RWD/index.htm?id=1120973 (ignore the part about the starter, that was just something to throw us off the trail for awhile).

THANKS! I'll look into that. By "air box" , do you mean the air box thermostat? And, is there another name for the "air cleaner"? Sorry, I'm still learning about this car.

Yes, you're correct, it's the air box thermostat and as for the air cleaner, that's what my mechanic called it, it's a long metal or plastic coiled hose with what looks like a scrubber on the end of it and I believe it plugs into the air box somehow. My apologies for my lack of technical/mechanical jargon/knowledge :)

After he replaced those things, no more rough idle and I have 3x the power I did before, the difference was astounding!
