replace antenna mast on '92 745 700 1992

Hi all,

Just bought a nice '92 745 turbo with 125,000 miles on it. However, the power antenna is frozen about 12 inches in the air. I can hear the antenna motor running when I turn the radio or engine off, so I know the power antenna motors works.

Question: Can I just buy this replacement and replace it myself?

Will the nylon cord be automatically be grabbed by the antenna motor when I feed it down?

Paul

replacing the power antenna mast is a perfect shade-tree mechanic job. in fact, you will need to learn how to do it, because you will likely replace the antenna often.

fortunately, you probably only need to replace the mast and not the power drive. new masts are readily available for purchase online at around $12 online (plus shipping). google: power antenna mast volvo 745. you should purchase two.

you can also use google to find instructions for the r&r of the mast. in general, you must pop out the plastic access panel inside the car just below the antenna. power up the antenna and listen for the whirl of the motor. if you don't hear anything, you may need to troubleshoot a faulty power antenna motor. usually, though, the toothed nylon cord has snapped. remove one (or two) set screws at the top of the power motor to release the cord. pull the antenna out from outside the car. if it hangs up, turn on the power antenna and see if it will push out the remaining cord.

after you've gotten the old cord out, turn on the power antenna--the motor should run and will not turn off. feed the new mast cord down into the motor, turning it until the motor gear catches the teeth on the cord. when the motor has drawn up the entire mast cord, it will stop. reassemble all the whatnots and enjoy.

As long as you can get all the sections of old mast out and the brass clip at the top, you're all set to install a new mast. Make sure to get the long one for a wagon.

The top clip comes out with the last, fattest section of mast and like we say at work, it takes a strong jerk to get it out. :)

As long as you are able to remove all the old nylon gear teeth, the new one will thread in and the gears will grab it. It'll probably take some twisting and turning and having someone turn the antenna switch on and off before it goes up and down right. Once it grabs it though, you'll know!

Yes, if you've removed the old pieces of nylon, then it will be grabbed by some teeth down there.

I ended up disassembling my antenna mast, because there was some crap stuck.
