Need a bell housing for 71 B20E 140-160

Arrghh!
I lost the bearing for the countershaft on my M41 and it ate a hole in my bell housing when it spun in the transmission case. The case is lost, but I have a spare M41 I am going to use for the rebuild.
I was looking for a spare bell housing for a B20E 71 volvo, actually mine is a 142E but any from an 1800 should work.
Anybody have a good parts list and source for the M41 parts.
Thanks
Joel

Can't imagine how a bad layshaft bearing could destroy a bell housing.
Even if it did wear through, I just don't see how it would render it useless.
Maybe I'm missing something in the translation.
Anyway, I have an extra from a B20.
If your interested, send me an e-mail.

Is the bellhousing really so bad you can't use it?

Hello All,
The best I can fiqure (without opening the box)is the countershaft bearing froze up, causing the countershaft to spin, which enlarged the shaft's hole in the casing and also damaged the bell housing where the countershaft sets in a slight indenture. That whole area where the countershaft sits against the bell housing was boogied up by the spining countershaft, but it can be repaired at a machine shop. I would rather have another bell housing.
I took the destroyed M41 along with a marginal M41 to a friend's shop who has a lot of experience from the past. Grover agreed to take my good overdrive and connect it to a rebuilt M41 gearbox. Grover said he hasn't done one in ten years but could still do it in his sleep. I am lucky as hell to have found someone who would agree to work on an antique transmission, and actually know what they are doing.

You can also use an M40 gearbox case if you had to.
The only thing different between the M40 and M41 gearbox two is the long output shaft IIRC.
There are two different styles of M40 and M41 gearbox cases depending on year.
The later ones had a slightly larger layshaft spindle and a different 1st gear.
The early and late layshafts and spindles are not interchangable but other gear related items are.
I've got some gearbox parts too, but it sounds like you've already solved the problem.
That's good news!

Tom,
I was lucky to have a spare M41 setup. I do have an old M40 case. I always wanted to put together a gearbox using Phil's directions. But right now I can afford to have someone help me and I really miss driving my Volvo.
After he sorts through what he needs for the rebuild, I intend to start collecting the necessary parts to build a spare unit myself. Will contact you maybe to purchase some parts.
Thanks for your support.

Filling plugz on 4 gear transmitting box not in same plase! For 4 gear box only, plug lower on case htan 4 gear pluss OverDrve. Perhaps can match OD with 4 gear box, but un-possible to fill flooid to korrect leveling. Also un[-possibel to chekk level of flooid. Er maybee posible but not simple as sh0ould be.

Szplug!

I just compared a M40 & M41 case and you are indeed correct again.
Same part number embossed on the cases -obviously not the gearbox id tag though.
Appears to be just different fill level heights as you stated.

SKOL!

If from an 1800, must be from a '69 - '73 that did not have the M410 (most '70s and some '71s did). Cars that originally had B18s had hydraulic clutches, and the bellhousing is different. For M410 cars, the bellhousing is part of the transmission.

As far as I know, the bell housing is the same on all 140s, B18, B20, Carb or FI, M40 or M41. 75 240 is similar but has a different mounting for the clutch cable. 122/1800 are hydraulic clutch and are also different. PV is mechanical linkage and may be yet another variant. All will bolt up to either transmission so the determining factor is the type of car it will be used in. I have no experience with M410s, so I can't comment on them.

The late type transmission with the larger intermediate shaft can be recognized externally by the reinforcing ribs on the sides of the case.
