Its normal. Here's a similiar situation to illustrate why. Consider 2 equal value resistors connected in series and then to GND on one side and 12 Volts on the other. If you measure with a volt meter in the middle you will read 6V. If you remove the GND connection all points go to 12V. Without a GND connection no current flows hence no voltage drops. A voltmeter has very high input resistance and doesn't allow enough current to cause any noticable voltage drop.
