What to buy, S70, 850, 960, S40?

Find a really good condition low mileage 960 year 1996 or 1997 or a 1998 S90 or V90. (V = Van = Wagon, S = sedan)

Keep it for yourself and give the 240 to your son.

If he wants to have more power, be sure the 240 has a tach. Shift gears at 3500 rpm and the car will go pretty quickly.

The 240 is much more forgiving, easier to maintain, and has less power thsn the 960. 240 used parts are widely available. Fuel efficiency can be similar, if the 240 is standard shift.

The 960 is a luxury car, best used as a "You earn it, You feed it, You insure it, You fix it" car, in my opinion.

The other Volvos in the "S" or "V" or other letter series are not RWD cars.

Good Luck,

Bob
