The U joints on our bricks are darn near bullet proof. Since your indy will have to remove the driveshaft to replace the carrier bearing, they will let you know if the U-joints need replaced. No slop, no grind, no problem.
Also have them check the pinion shaft input on the rear dif. I thought I had a bad carrier bearing, but it turned out that the rear pinion bearing (and gear) was chewed to crap. If this is the case, replace the entire rear end with a good salvage unit. Hope I'm wrong on this one! Usually, a carrier bearing failure is associated with a burning rubber smell. No smell, think pinion.
