best axle oi l and can this partial axle ID be deciphered? 200 1989

The upper left hand corner of the axle ID label was missing.
Is it possible to determine which axle I have from these remaining characters on the axle label? Only these characters remain.
on top left corner; farr 016034
On the bottom; NR 1216334
Or is there another method I overlooked?
Also what would be the best oil to use to help quiet the axle whine and extend its life.

I have never found a gear oil which reduces axle whine noticeably. That said, I use Royal Purple Synthetic gear lube in ours. Limited slip or not, GL-4 and GL-5 rated and readily available at the local NAPA for $10/quart.

      Hi!
All respect, have you used normal GL-4 oil in Dana /spicer LS rear end? It doesen`t matter is it 15 kpm or normal "lock" if there is no LS "extra" chemicals you can drive, of course but soon you don`t have any working power lock. The plates don`t balanced rotation, when they are finished end. I am very interested to have cheaper oil to use, if its possible to find somewhere.

I use Lucas oil in my rear

Wall Mart sells a nice cheap 75w Super Tech synthetic gear oil

    Mobil one is good.

    And so on.

Basically, I would run a synthetic gear oil just because most are inclined to leave it. Plus, it will perform better in the cold.

I have been using a quart of Lucas topped off by the Wall Mart synth.

    Greetings from FINLAND.
In here, those are missing almost every car. The axle is M-31. Do you know, has it Limited Slip Diff ? If you are not sure, take off the cover, Then if you see little diff gears well, you don`t have LS. Make it sure, because OIL`s are not same. There is also numbers in the "big plate gear" whith them you can count the ratio. Ex 3.73:1 . We have here used Mobil Synt Gear oil SAE 75W90 or 75w90LS. In old days Taxis used VOLVO`s original thermo oil. What ever any High quality GL-5 oil is ok. Important is that there is enough oil (its ok, when its leaking out in the hole) The rear ends are almost " the bomb proof " If you service them well.

Thanks on confirming its a 1031. Once I take the back cover off, is there any to check the condition of the axle. I can imagine that metal particles in the oil, chipped teeth, abnormal wear patturns or perhaps bearing noise when I rotate the wheels would be an indicator. I'm sure that some of this wear would be expected, determining how serious it is, is the question. This is my primary vehicle during the winter and would prefer not having it go visiting relatives during Christmas When that time does come I can only hope its alot warmer than it is now.

        HI!
Did I miss something ? Is it noisy? How many miles has it seen the road ? My experience is that if M-31 has the same oil during its life, and level is too low, it can be worse condition about after 250000 km. There is always a little bit metal particles, eaven in the first guarantee service (1500 km). M-30 has not so well Pinion bearings but I have had a few cars, drove whithout oil chance over 400000 km and they was OK. Owner`s just take care to refill it. I have drove once 3000 km ( Pori to Inari, and back) the car was so noisy, that I chance SAE 140 oil, it helps that much at can talk whitout shouting. It doesent fall a part. I chance the axle and when I open the cover, there was still 3/4 gears on. Rest were in that "porridge" it wasn`t oil anymore. However, I hope, that everything is ok in your VOLVO. Best Regards to you.
