After strut replacement, driver's side clunks 200 1981

Re: 81 242DL strut replacement. Replaced stock struts with Bilstein HDs, new mounts, GT stiffer springs and GT reinforcement plates.

Took the car for a spin after replacmement. Driver's side clunks when accelerating off the line and also during sudden steering. (Yes I know, "don't do that!" lol). Brought car back, checked everything -- looks tight. Right side is firm but left side clunks when I push on the fenders.

Guys, help me brainstorm for possible solutions. Also if you need more info to diagnose the problem let me know as I'm sure I'm leaving out important info. Thanks so much for all your help.

On my '90, there was a metal ring spacer between the bottom of the strut insert and the strut. That spacer can stick to the old insert when you pull it out. If you don't notice it, you will leave it out when you install the new inserts and the result will be a clunk like the one you describe.

I hope this is not it. Doing struts is one of my least favorite jobs.

What has happened to me is that after the whole thing was put together one strut finally seated all the way down in the strut tower tube so that the threaded cap that holds the strut body in the tower could now be tightened a turn more. This has happened a couple of times. Hard to see because it's covered by that boot over the strut rod and inside the spring.

Why oh why don't they make 240s anymore :(

Check the gland nut that holds the insert to the strut or the nut on top is not tight or seated. I got rid of a clunk by putting a washer under the top nut that allowed me secure it tight. Dan
