740 ECT Problems 700 1990

'90 740 195K miles. Replaced ECT (Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor)because of Fault Code. Car continues to hard start when cold. Fault Code for bad ECT is back. Any suggestions? Recently replaced fuel pumps, filter, plugs, wires, dist. cap and rotor.

Which sensor did you replace? The one for engine control is at #3 cylinder. Regtangular connector, not rounded. The one at #2 cylinder is for the gauge.

If you replaced the correct one, then connections either at the sensor or elsewhere in the circuit may be at fault. The ground path is internal to the brass housing screwed into the cylinder head.

First question, did you replaced it with the "black" one? Blue color is for earlier models.
Check the wiring, the female pins on the connector itself are known to push themselves back out and not make good contact.
