brake light issue 200 1991

I'm having an issue with my brake lights. I had a running light out and after inspection I noticed that there was a slight tear in the circuit board at that bulb so I installed a new old circuit board that I had laying around. I now have all of the lights working but the right side brake light stays on bright at all times. I seem to remember reading about this a while back but I couldn't find anything in the archives.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks in advance.

Kirk S.

When you installed the new old circuit board, did it have the same part number? They look very similar.

Check the color of the lower outer bulb holders. White on the right, black on the left. No options. Wrong installation results include wrong filament being lit up.

    Good Luck,

Since the problem is commonly caused by having the bulb holders reversed, and that is an easy fix, let me restate what's needed: Black on the driver's side, white on the passenger side.

If that is now correct, check the white bulb holder to be sure that the bulb is inserted correctly, not forced in "backwards". The pins on the bulb base are at different distances from the glass, and the slots in the socket are of different depths. The pin nearest the glass goes into the slot with the least depth.

Another possibility is that the slots into which the bulb holder fits may be compromised such that the wider "key" on the holder can fit in wrongly. There should be only one wide slot; the holder must fit in such that the ground tab touches the copper film that is on the the outside of the circuit board corner.

Determine the ground tab by inspecting the bulb holder. The tab which is in contact with the base is ground. The other tabs are the hot side of each of the two filaments.

These are quick fixes, so if the problem remains unsolved, post back and we'll keep trying.

        Good Luck,

        Bob

          thanks bob,

          problem seems to be fixed.
this is an aftermarket replacement and the bulb holder fit in
a bit funky so i put in a white holder that i had laying around (genuine volvo one)
and it work fine. i think the orientation may indeed have been wrong and it's now correct.
the notches on the new lamp assembly aren't quite as clear as to what goes where.
thanks for your help, i appreciate it greatly.

          Kirk S.
