auto transmission doesn't lock wheels 200 1978

I recently bought this car. I haven't had any issues with the transmission, no noticable leaks, fluid looks nice and red, but it won't hold the car in place in park. I read in my manual about adjusting the shift linkage, and it sounds like something I should do, but that cant possibly be responsible for this can it? I guess I'm just wondering if this is something I should be worried about. Any thoughts?

I do so hope you have a very good parking brake. I used to call them emergency brakes but stopped that nonsense after a set of shoe surfaces decided to come unglued one day. Glad I was not using it in an emergency..As Bruce said check the roll pin...Have fun taking off the filler tube..

The parking pawl may be sheared off due to
engaging 'park' before the car is stopped.

Parking pawl may be fixable... 200 1978

...like a '76 I had. It was a moveable part that was spring-loaded on a rod, with a roll-pin holding it in one direction -- or something like that (about 12 years ago now).

At any rate, the sheared roll-pin was replaceable after draining and removing the pan and lowering the valve body.
