Water pump stud 200 1980

I'm doing the timing belt so I'm also doing the water pump. The belt looked like it could go another 50,000 miles so that is not the reason for my no start. The water pump is another story. It is a corroded mess. I got it off and found that two bolts had snapped off. I got the top one out but the bottom one (to the left of the water hole) has snapped off close to the block. Anybody had any success getting this type out?

Several months ago I had one snap off. I was able to drill it out without removing the radiator, using a right angle drill motor. By being very careful to keep the drill dead center in the bolt, I was able to start off with a small drill and work up larger to the minor diameter of the bolt. Then using a combination of a tap (original thread size and thread pitch) and a pointy awl, I was able to chase out all the remaining thread and re-install an original size bolt.

5 or 6 bits later it seems that the bits just don't get anywhere. Probably a patience thing. I've purchased titanium bits to try.

Making progress. I was able to get through. Getting it started is the big problem. Once you get to a certain point it drills easily.

Yes, patience is the key. The last thing you want to do is snap a drill off in it. Good luck!
