How easy or difficult is it to change the undercar fuel filter?

I've done it and it isn't a bad job. Just a little messy. See the specific instructions in the 700/900 FAQ under "select-link" at the top right of this page. The instructions there are for the Bosch cars with two fuel pumps. The Regina cars have the filter in the same spot, but no pump there so it's easier. You don't say what year your car is and whether it's a turbo, but you will generally get beter answers if you do.

But it seems that the huge filters they put on bricks are very seldom in need of changing.

Thanks. Question applies to Bosch cars. '89 760T and '91 240 NA. Inasmuch as some repair shops utilize impact guns to tighten the fuel filter, do you know if this presents any problem breaking the bolts with hand wrenches?

As Spasske says, PB Blaster or other penetrating oil is almost always a good idea. Plan on that spray, and later, the gasoline dissolving some undercoating and making a mess.

I have worked on these in two cars that appeared to have original, 15 year old units from the rust belt. I didn't break anything, but there is always that possibility.

If it has never been changed it may be very difficult to remove. Spraying it with a pentrating fluid like Pblaster the day before may help a lot.
