Tip for helping trouble shoot when alone 700 1991

I tee a wire from the solenoid hot & dead end it near the power steering reservoir with an insulated solderless terminal. This allows me by myself to crank the engine w/ a simple pushbutton. Makes it easy to check for spark/injector signal etc. Just pack the terminal w/ grease to make sure it doesn't corrode.

Cool move. Guess this is just one more feature of the 240 that didn't make it into its "replacement".

A second Service Socket 700 1991

Actually, the "Service Socket" is there on the 700/900 too, at least on my '93 940. It's not up on the firewall like the 240's, but comes from a harness bundle on the left front fender next to the air filter box.

It may not be easy to see (not much slack) but it's a single pink wire in a double Blue plug, with a female flat terminal.

So "ibs" had a good idea, even though Volvo had it first.

A second Service Socket 700 1991

Bruce,

I'm sure I'm showing my ignorance, but presuming I found this socket on my 740s, exactly what would I need to make use of it?

Thanks

Hi Andy,

I guess it's not well known, but can be handy for crankingthe engine over from under the hood—like for compression testing.

Just jumper +12V from the battery, preferably via a push-button switch, to the service socket. It goes to the solenoid ignition switch terminal, but not directly — the neutral safety switch (auto tranny) is still in the circuit.
