can you swap front seats from a 740 to a 245dl? 200 1989

The drivers seat in my 89 245dl is really giving me a pain in my lower back&my right shoulder.
I'm 6'2"&the foot room&seating position is not to friendly to guys like me.The seat won't go back any further&the even if they did seat belts would be too loose to be off use in an accident.
I'm looking at some real nice tan leather seats in a 90 740 sedan.the yard nearby has them for $20 each.
I didn't get to measure the tracks at the yard before I left today.Gracias,,Genghis Kahn for President!!

Lucky you, only 6'2' 200 1989

My son is 6'7".
I've adjusted everything on our Volvo seats in an effort to fit them to his frame.
No luck.
I considered getting something welded up, but it's a safety structure so I'm not going to mess with it.

The only vehicles he fits comfortably are monsters like Nissan Titan. He drives a little speedy econocar, just tilts the seat back pretty far and makes do. I wish I could sell him on a brick, but no luck. I just can't imagine where he got that self-determined hard head.

Did he ever try a 544?I used to be able to slide the seats back too far for me to reach the pedals.
&as for it being a safety issue, I think that any decent welder would be able to modify the seats racks.
Find out what vehicles are popular in Texas.I saw a lot of men&women over 6'4 down there.

I am 6'4" and the 240 cockpit is marginal for me.
The 140's have more room in the front seat.
It seems they kept the overall length the same and
somehow shortened the cockpit.
I guess the space went to the push bumpers.
Above 5 meters pays commercial rates on the ferry boats
in Scandanivia.
At least it was that way in 73 during my last visit.
Erling-Webberman is this still true?

From previous BB posts, the width of available space for the 240 seat is not enough for a 700/900 seat.

Better to work on your existing 240 seat. Your other answers are good.

My first 240, a 1975 245DL, was previously owned my a fellow just a bit taller than five feet. He had re-set the seat rails to the most forward of the two holes available.

Since I was them 6'1" I quickly changed to the the rearmost. Then I set the front elevation pins to the middle hole, the back pins to the top holes for lowest seat location.

Later on, when we took a 240 on a long trip of 2,000 miles, I got the adjustable seat rack from a driver's seat and installed it on the passenger seat. (From the factory that seat came with nuts and bolts in the pin holes, adjustment meant removing the seat.) That way I could set the passenger seat to the highest location in front, lowest in back, which ended my gradual slipping down to under the dash while trying to relax and snooze while wife.sig was driving.

Good Luck with your seat.

FWIW: Our wifemobile is a 965. At church I park the 1988 240 on our wooded overflow parking lot, between some pretty close together trees. Recently we had a parking overload, so I pulled in farther and told wife.sig to park behind the 240. It wouldn't fit. We measured the two cars width across the outside rear view mirrors and found that the 965 is 5 inches wider than the 240. Thus the wider seats.

Good Luck,

Bob

Yeah Thanks,I just adjusted it back&now the position is much better.
But I'm still thinking of getting those 740 seats. They seem to fit in the car,I'll have to look at the rail setup to see if they'll work if not,,I should be able to sell them to someone here.
They're real nice tan leather,I'll take em to a local welder&see what he can do.

You may not know but there is a rear adjustment lever that will drop the seat down closer to the Floor. It's located under the seat in the back. That may help you to drop the seat down and then straighten the backrest back up.

Thanks, that works better,NOW I just have to get a better seal on the F**&king filter so no fuel leaks out,my 87'e-150 had a much better fuel seal setup .I may look for one in the junkyard&se if i can mate it too the volvo lines.no frigging copper seals just plastic push on caps that are fastened on by a plastic staple to the side.no rust no road crud screws it up.
That van I had was really greaty for moving loads of tortillas&chiles all around ,carried 3000#'s easy&got 12-15 mpg doing it.I changed the filters on that about every 20,000. ,so simple a child could do it ,,if the fuses were taken out&the pressure released.

I second or third the note about the rear height adjustment. I'm 6'2" also and wasn't that comfy when i got my brick. Once I read the manual and dropped the rear of the seat down it was perfect.

I have no problem w/ long trips now, I just wish my daughter would quit kicking the back of my seat! Can't wait to put them in booster seats to lower their foot height.

The bottom of the seat track is completely different. You will find this out if you pull those 700 seats. There's a huge pin that locks the seat into the floor.

If you cut that off, and probably fabricate some brackets towards the rear of the seat, I'm sure you can get them to fit. It may require some serious creativity. I don't know what your skill level is with welding and so on. Genghis Khan should be able to do anything he wants!

But you should also look at repairing your front seats. They're supposed to be very comfortable. Most 240 seats have broken foam in the back rest. Usually under the driver's right shoulder, as it turns out. Makes the seat appear twisted, or melted some people would say.

The foam can be repaired or replaced by a piece from an undamaged passenger seat. The other thing that breaks is the lumbar support- it's a plastic web attached to wires at each end. The plastic breaks, the wires fail, it ends up down in the bottom of the seatback and you fall into a hole in the seat. more or less.

Last- have you adjusted the seat height? There are height adjusting pins under the front and rear of the seat. Many people with 240's don't know about these. You reach under the rear of the seat, in the center and pull the lever over to release these pins. You'll probably want the seat to be quite low in the back. It adjusts about 3 inches total so you will gain a lot of room with it angled correctly.

Good luck with it!

It's also possible - I recall, to remove the seat from the runners and relocate it on the mountings, ie there's more than one set of bolt holes. I read it described here and was thinking of doing the same when I get the seat out - however looking at the parts drawing (now)I can't see how.

I think it was said to accommodate drivers up to around 6ft 6in - it would reduce the legroom behind obviously.

Refer to daveshan's website on adjusting the seat for tall people. He has a great write up with photos.
