It's been a while since Volvos were boxy .... 200

I'm not arguing in favor of their new cars (I like the "box" -- I've got three 240's, and have no desire for any newer ones), but hasn't it already been a while since new Volvos were boxy?

Take the current S cars (S40, S60) .... where do you see any remnant of a box on them?! My daughter just bought herself an '07 S60 -- my wife said that, except for the emblem and diagonal slash on the grille, she wouldn't recognize it as a Volvo if it was too far to read the name on the trunk. To me, it already has the 'Ford Taurus' shape (as do Jaguars, etc.) except for a few creases in the fenders here and there.

In fact, this new crossover you cited really is strongly suggestive of the current S cars: not very different from them, except maybe that the whole passenger compartment is 'swollen' to raise it a bit, and of course the radical front end styling of the grille (typical 'show car' embellishment).

Summary: the real changes, departing from the box, has already occurred.
