A/C Compressor Bearing Question 900

'94 960 has noise coming from the A/C compressor bearing. It doesn't spin smoothly, so I'm assuming it's headed for a seized bearing at some point in the future.

Hence my questions: can I replace just the bearing, or will I need to purchase an A/C clutch/bearing assembly? The faq addresses only the clutch with no mention of just the bearing. And I'd like to do it without opening the A/C system. Is this a straight-forward process to remove the clutch and bearing with the compressor in place?

Also, I'd welcome suggestions for a source for the bearing that doesn't involve a dealer. No mention of a bearing on the websites for FCP Groton or Import Parts Specialists.

Regards,

Robert

A/C Compressor Bearing Answer 900

Just to report back, I was able to get the car back in service. The local bearing supply house was able to match the bearing with a duplicate - it even had the same number stamped on it. I pressed the bearing into the clutch with the help of a little oil on the outer bearing surface. Put the clutch back on the compressor, installed the circlips and nut, and was off to the races. Engine is much quieter now that there is no bearing noise, and I don't have to worry about a seized bearing interrupting any trips. The entire repair cost $20.

For anyone who cares, you can replace the clutch and / or bearing without removing the compressor. I was hoping to avoid having to open the system to remove the compressor and then having to replace the receiver dryer and recharge the R134a. The tricky parts were maneuvering the circlip tool around the shaft of the compressor using a mirror to see, plus pulling the clutch off the shaft without a proper pulling tool. But it can be done.

Thanks again for advice and shared experiences.

Robert

A/C Compressor Bearing Answer 900

Hello Robert, Happy New Year and can you give me the phone number of the place where you found the bearing. I have 4 compressors I have saved that all need the bearing. I had no luck in the local bearing companies in Richmond. Thanks, Pauli

A/C Compressor Bearing Question 900

Hello, I had the same problem and ended up buying a whole new compressor with the clutch. 165.00 on line with shipping. I tried to put just a bearing in the clutch, but I went to 3 different bearing companies and had no luck with the inner diameter. I am sure it is out there, but my time is worth more than it was taking me to find the part to repair, so I broke down and got one rebuilt. Pauli

A/C Compressor Bearing Question - Addendum (2nd try) 900

not sure what happened to my post, but here is what it was supposed to say:

I was able to follow the procedure in the FAQ to remove the compressor clutch without removing the compressor from the car. It was a little tricky getting the circlip removed from the front of the compressor while in place, as I had to use a mirror to see the clip. Anyway, got the clutch off and was able to drive the bearing out of the clutch housing.

The local auto parts stores were unable to match it, and a Google search of the part number hasn't turned up a source yet. I'll try the local bearing supply house when they open after the holidays. FIY, the part number on the bearing is 35BD219DU.

A/C Compressor Bearing Question - Addendum (2nd try) 900

I'm not sure if the bearing is available without the clutch assembly, but call the guy at www.nostalgicairparts.com. If it's available, he should be able to set you up. I don't bother trying to fix compressors anymore, I can get new ones from him for about the same money , with a lot less fuss.

A/C Compressor Bearing Question - Addendum (2nd try) 900

In Houston, a city with many small to medium sized machine and fabrication shops, there are a number of bearing houses. Most carry SKF and other top quality bearings in a vast array of sizes.

I have always been able to take a bearing in to one of them, and they could find an exact match, even front wheel bearings and alternator front bearings.

Check for a good bearing house near you.

Good Luck,

Bob

A/C Compressor Bearing Question 900

Yours I don't know.
On the oldtimers they are a standard bearing and the pulley is removed
from the clutch by taking out the bolt in the center and then screwing
a much larger bolt into the counterbored hole which is threaded to act like
a puller. So it might be worth a look to see if there are threads inside
a hole bigger than ½" in the center of the pulley.
