940 T engine suddenly stops while driving 900

My 1995 940 T has started a problem of the engine suddenly stops while driving.

The car has had the fuel tank fuel pump replaced a year ago along with fuel filter, new plugs, wires and distributor cap.

After doing some searching through the archives I take it the first places to investigate might be the fuel pump relay and the 25 amp fuse on the side of the engine compartment?

Any other suggestions very welcome...

Thanks.

What error codes are you getting?
Check them, and also right after it stalls, check them to see if there's a code that isn't storing.

In testing the error codes, both the #6 and #2 holes read out an error free 1-1-1.

The power stage unit seems to be firmly anchored to the body wall.

I'd wonder if it was the ignition contact switch.. but in trying to restart I jiggled it with the key, to no effect. It only seemed that after a minute the car restarted as if there was no problem.

It's this mysterious waiting 1 minute that seems odd.

Anyhow, thanks for any more insights.

Merry Xmas too!

If no codes, forget about the rpm sensor, Chances are it's the power stage.
Have a volt meter handy next time it poops out and quickly pop the hood and attach the red connector to the + side of the coil and the black to ground and have someone crank the thing. Chances are you'll get nothing. Most likely the Power stage, if you get voltage and it doesn't fire, the coil is shot. Replace them both, when one goes, the other isn't far behind.
I'd be willing to guess you have somewhere between 125 and 150k miles on the thing.

If you have an extra pump mtd.on the chassis ,,I'll bet thatones is gone too.
I was having the most problems w/ mine&just replaced it w/ a junk yard one&now it works great.
MAKE sure when you replace any &all copper seals on the filter that the seal works PERFECTLY WELL.
I JUST REALIZED THAT FOR THE LAST YEAR I'VE BEEN USING EXTRA GAS CAUSE ,,BEING SPRAYED UNDERNEITH,,,MELTING THE UNDERCOATTING.
THAT SETUP VOLVO USES IS REALLY CRAP,,,RIGHT NOW I HAVE TO GO OUT&GET SOME EXTRA SEALS TO FIX A DRIP.
I WAS GETTING 25 MPG&HOPE TO INCREASE THAT A REAL LOT SO LESS MONEY IS GOING TO OUT TRAITOR IN CHIEF BUTT BUDDIES

Thanks to all for the excellent insights.

I'd say considering the potential danger of losing power while out in traffic, it'd be a good idea to just replace all those sensors & relays.

So you might hear from me again, if I can't figure out how and where to find them...

Happy Holidays to all the Brickboard!

These sudden-stall issues are becoming quite regular on this board. It seems to be based on the age of these cars. The 3 culprets that keep coming up are the Radio Supression Relay, the Fuel Pump Relay, and the RPM/Crank Sensor. They all seem to go at 10-12 years and the cost of all three combined is less than an hour of labor at a decent shop. So replacing them as preventive maintenance is sound logic.

If you want to be more scientific about it, buy all three parts and replace them one at a time to see which one is causing the current problem.

For my money, I replaced all three and figure I'm good for another 10-12 years.

Good luck, and post back with your results.

When it stalls while driving does the tach drop immediately to zero? If so I would suspect the crank position sensor (aka rpm sensor).

Relatively easy and inexpensive fix.

The 940 doesn't have that 25 amp fuse there; that's the earlier 240's.

I think that most sudden cutouts (particularly if you're just holding a steady throttle, not accelerating or anything) are electrical in nature. If the tach dies rapidly when this happens, this would confirm it. You might want to add power stage to your list.

I believe all turbos are Bosch ignition (see FAQ for determining this). If so, it could be this power stage mounted in the front left corner of the engine compartment, near the headlight. Check for intermittant connection or poor heat transfer connection to the body (thermal paste required) before replacing.

If it isn't Bosch, check out the "Update" post in this coil/power stage repair.

Does it start up again after sitting for about ten minutes? Mine did that a couple years ago (’93 945T), I replaced both the fuel pump relay and the crank sensor (a.k.a. RPM sensor) and that solved the problem. I never did figure out which one had gone bad but it was one or the other.

Here’s information in the FAQ about both:

Symptoms of a Bad Fuel Pump Relay

Crank Position Sensor information

Thanks to everyone for all the great knowledge.

It's trying to figure out the mysterious nature of intermittent problems like these that can be so frustrating.

Since I see that the fuel pump relay seems to sometimes involve a waiting period for restart... I'd say that's probably #1 on my list.

Thanks!
