Wacky Windshield Wipers 200 1984

hey all

happy (almost) new year!

I have a bizzar problem with my windshield wipers. A few days ago, after owning the car for a month without a problem, the windshield wipers on my 1984 DL sw began acting strange. I was going down the highway and while they were turned on, the one in front of the passenger seat began going way off beat. This happened for a few minutes until it got so bad that the two blades were hitting each other. I though maybe the nut was loose so i tightened it up and they worked fine when i tried to wash the window. Again I was on the highway in the rain and they started doing the same thing except this time the driver's side blade got stuck in the vertical position. I stopped and pushed both into the resting position and they were doing fine for a few days until it happened again. This time, the passenger side blade got stuck under the chrome trim and only the drivers side wiper was working. I haven't done anything differently, except I added Rain-X add-in fluid to the washer liquid, could this have caused a problem (I doubt it but I had to ask)?

Thanks
BRANDON

The blades stay in relative positions with splines on the shaft & matching splines on the arms. The arms are a soft metal, and when you put them through what happened to you, they can and will strip out the splines.

Time to go junkyard shopping for new arms.

If you're lucky, you just need to re-tighten the blade connection to the shaft.
It's best to lift the blade into it's up (locked) position. The shaft is tapered and if you don't get the blade firmly seated on the tapered shaft, it's hard to get it properly tightened. Sometimes it helps to remove it and clean the blade and shaft connection with some solvent to remove any dirt or grease.
Hope this helps
steve
