Engines for the 900 series 900

I will move to Dubai in just over a month and want to subscribe to the KISS principle, so instead of buying new I'd like to buy a used 700 or 900 series Volvo.

With great experience with my wife's '83 240GL with the B23 engine for Canada (CIS FI system), I'd like to get a Volvo with a single OHC if possible. Were they used in the 900 series? I don't know if I need a turbo. Heck, I am 58 y.o. and like my life as it is. Speed is not an essential part of life. Longevity is more important. For example.....This past summer I bicycled across northern Australia (www.savannahway.com.au) and the trip across dirt roads and fording rivers (no bridges) took 6 weeks. By myself, pulling a trailer and sleeping under the stars.

If necessary due to the engines available, then obviously a DOHC will have to do for the RWD Volvo I buy. I have already decided on a Volvo instead of a BMW in spite of the fewer Volvos for sale on the used market there.

Engine comments and things to look for in a used Volvo would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Engines for the 900 series 900

    HI!

Yes, I have same opinnion, as Volvo-dad. They dont care so much about car- serving. Early 240 was fitted whith B-23A.s not E engines. Maybe eaven K-jet was too complicated in the middle- east. How ever 940 series has several motor variations, also low pressure Turbo`s. The B-230 FB/FG engines has 531 heads whith VX- cam fitted. If You don`t care ET/FT engines that can be very suitable alternative. Very well torque, but not so much high- end power. It is an European variant so maybe not available in M.E. But if You can buy VOLVO in Europe, posibilites are much bigger, to find excellent condition vechile. Good Luck.

There are lots of Volvos in the Middle East oil states. I don't recall seeing more than a few 240's (too old) but quite a few 700's. The place is overrun with M-B's and BMW's.

You should be able to pick up a decent 700 (900's are less prolific). Most 700/900 cars had a SOHC B2xx engine, which is basically a slightly updated B23. It is highly unlikely you would find a model there which you could bring back (legally) to Canada - although you didn't indicate that intent.

My observation was that they don't seem to be big on car care there - kind of a "use-it-up-and-get-a-new-one" approach. Given the climate - I'd suggest being especially watchful for signs that the engine has been overheated. So, Caveat Emptor.

Thanks for the info regarding the 700/900 availability. This info corresponde with what i see in the Gulf News want-ads.. No 240 series for sale.

No, I really don't plan on bringing the Volvo back to Canada. I WANT to totally rebuild the '83 240GL that we have here in Manitoba, and there are plenty of Volvos in North America to buy used in case I have money to throw away..

Yes, to your comments about BMW and M-B cars there. The want ads are FULL of them. However, the BMWs have DOHC engines that take more TLC and $$$ than the Volvos. I have NO experience with the M-B vehicles and at the age of 58 why bother learning about another car brand's idiosyncracies when I really like bicycling to keep fit and.....besides, I like the 2.3L Volvo FI engine to work on ....

Well, I can't certainly say what was sold on the Middle East markets, but certainly the 940 and 740 (except 740GLE, 89-90) all came with the B230F or B230FT, which is essentially the same engine as your B23E, were for sale in North America.

The 89-90 740GLE came with a DOHC variation on the same basic block.

The 900 series came with a straight 6 DOCH also. Not nearly as easy to work on as the 'ol B230s.

      p.s.

What did you do about such things as health insurance when you did your cycling trip acros AU?

Thanks for the info about the straight 6 - I will avoid that one. The B23 four cylinder is fine. Mind you several versions did not have the longevity of the earlier ones due to smaller bearings etc..

As far a health insurance was concerned, I had "travel health insurance" from Canada. It came with the Blue Cross health package provided by my employer. Mind you, we do have to pay for such additions, so such additional coverage is NOT free, but it is a small price as compared to similar coverage in the USA.

I did use it once in Canberra when I had an infection on my foot. I paid up front and for the prescription too. Then upon return to Canada, Blue Cross reimbursed me.
