Engines for the 900 series 900

I will move to Dubai in just over a month and want to subscribe to the KISS principle, so instead of buying new I'd like to buy a used 700 or 900 series Volvo.

With great experience with my wife's '83 240GL with the B23 engine for Canada (CIS FI system), I'd like to get a Volvo with a single OHC if possible. Were they used in the 900 series? I don't know if I need a turbo. Heck, I am 58 y.o. and like my life as it is. Speed is not an essential part of life. Longevity is more important. For example.....This past summer I bicycled across northern Australia (www.savannahway.com.au) and the trip across dirt roads and fording rivers (no bridges) took 6 weeks. By myself, pulling a trailer and sleeping under the stars.

If necessary due to the engines available, then obviously a DOHC will have to do for the RWD Volvo I buy. I have already decided on a Volvo instead of a BMW in spite of the fewer Volvos for sale on the used market there.

Engine comments and things to look for in a used Volvo would be appreciated.

Thanks.
