'DID I FRY MY ECU' 200 1984

I recently replaced my engine wiring harness on my 1984 Volvo 240 GL and messed up by crossing two wires that had the same plug ends. One was suppose to go to the air idle control valve and the other to the throttle switch. My car started up just fine, but the idle was out of control. I disconnected the control valve and that brought the idle back to normal. I replaced the control valve and the throttle switch hoping that was the problem, but it was not. Any help here would be appreciated.

ANSWER 'DID I FRY MY ECU' 200 1984

I've read on this board that crossing the idle air control and throttle position switch will fry the ECU. The reason is the IAC is a motor and the TPS is a switch. When the IAC is connected to the TPS, it shorts out the power supply in the ECU and burns it up. There is currently one 1983-84 non turbo ECU on E-bay for $119: http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?sofocus=bs&sbrftog=1&from=R10&satitle=1984+volvo+ecu&sacat=-1%26catref%3DC6&sargn=-1%26saslc%3D2&sadis=200&fpos=37043&ftrt=1&ftrv=1&saprclo=&saprchi=&fsop=1&fsoo=1
Try your local salvage yard or go on line. A model # 280-000-503 or 280-000-510 will work but the 503 (red label) is best. Hirsch Foreign in Phoenix will sell used ones for around $100. jp

You say the 503 with red lable is the best! What would be the difference between the 510 and the 503. I'm just curious!!

      Thanks, J

I've had two 510's (green label) fail in my 83 DL and still running the orignal 503 in my 83 GL. So, the 503 is more robust. A used 503 sells for more than a 510 at some salavage yards. Don't know why Bosch used two different models for LH-II jetronics (83-84). jp

Thanks for the info and I hope this will help somebody else that is getting ready to replace their harness. These two plugs are identical and can be crossed. If I had read the instructions before installing, I would have seen that you are suppose to hook the wire with the blue band to the throttle switch. This would have saved me much grief and money.

I found a used ecu 510 from one of the members here on the brickboard. It should be here in the next couple of days. I'll get back with the results.

      Thanks,J

I recall reading about this before and I believe it may be fried. You can get them on ebay for $20 -$30 shipped, get two and keep a spare.

Did you swap the connectors back? Does it still run poorly? Dan

Yes, I swapped the connectors back and it seems to run just fine. I just disconnected the air idle control valve for the mean time until I can get a used 510.

      Thanks, J
