If you didn't toss that old one yet, you might be able to save it.

I've found that the failure is due to a burnt solder joint on the top deck of the circuit boards inside. It's designed WAY too close to the edge of the board, and so it fatigues and cracks, finally burning away with the high current of the brake lights.

If you feel like fiddling with it, pop the thing open with a couple little screwdrivers, and inspect that circuit board. It'll require a bit of patience and maybe a magnifying glass for those of us with not so fantastic eyes, but the solder joint can be located and the solder re-flowed. This ought to give you a working spare bulb failure relay if this is indeed the cause.

    Good luck with it!
