Anyone ever tried to remove the plastic cupholder tray from a Volvo armrest? 200 1986

I have a broken/missing front tray in my car but the rear one is still in good shape. I was thinking of trying to pull out the rear one and slide it into the front of the armrest.

but I can't seem to figure out how to get the tray out....

any help, as always, would be greatly appreciated.

    try this idea 200 1986

i own a 86 245 estate and wanted a cup holder in the car that wouldn't break or fall apart, so i got onto ebay and bought a cup holder made out of solid wood that fit's perfectly over the emergency brake and sits there solidly and you can remove it when not needing it. i've had the cup holder for 1 year or so and it's worked the same as the first day. just my 2 cents,

I would like to see a picture of this...

what would I search under on eBay? Is there a specific name for your block of wood?

Anyone ever tried to remove the plastic cupholder tray from a Volvo armrest? 200 1986

    hello
i have removed several from 700/900 series,
if you can grip it with your hand pull very hard and move side to side at same time.
there is one unseen tab on top and one on each side holding the slider in.
the rear pullout may or may not work on the front as the tab holders seem to have different locations on the 700/900 armrest.
    its certainly worth a try.
i have used a rear one in front and trimmed the top off the front of the plastic handle, you see the rear handle is taller than the front.
    hope this helps
    good luck
    mike

M, we must have parallel experiences. BTW, the entire tray assembly is easily removed, think thin blade. Pulling the separate slides from the tray is a pain isn't it? I have the 240 armrests, but sent a spare bracket/hing set to Europe to have it copied over there. One more thing, the 740, 940, 780 armrest is distinctly different in lock down geometry from the 760/960/940SE and of course both are different from the 240 button configuration.

        Hi Robert
yes i have removed the complete guts on the 700-900 series armrest.
in the past i have reversed the whole unit so to use the rear pullout in the front, as i find many good rear pullouts and less front pullouts in good conditon.
also i have taken apart regular 240 armrests and they have provisions for pullout cupholders, but are covered by material.
        good luck

    I haven't .... btw, does yours fly out on braking? .... 200 1986

Yeah, I've also got one of those armrests (two cupholders on a front slide, and two more on a rearward slide, right?). I also haven't figured how to remove either one.

Btw, after I put mine in, I found that every time I brake hard, the front tray goes flying out (forward). I would have expected there to be some catch to keep it from doing that, but I couldn't find any. This was the reason I tried to open up the armrest -- to see if there's some broken piece that otherwise is supposed to hold the tray until it's needed.

I finally had to resort to a piece of glue.

    Anyway, good luck.

        Here's the photo promised long ago .... 200 1986

Sorry for the long delay: it finally works.

Photo of Husco's armrest with built-in cupholders (already sent to AMSRoadRunner, but this is for anyone else):

        There's a problem posting my picture .... 200 1986

Hi. I know I wrote that I'll post the picture today, but I'm having trouble uploading it to the Brickboard website. The error message says, "...Your image is zero length. Please check the path to the file you wish to upload. (This may be due to a bug in this software. Fix pending.)..."

I think I can e-mail it to you instead. Let me know if you get it.

        Yes, by Husco - photos tomorrow .... 200 1986

Yes, the armrest was an aftermarket accessory that was perfectly designed for the later 240s (when they went with the seat belt "sockets" that weren't imbedded in the middle tunnel/handbrake housing as it is in my '84). It mounts onto a hefty metal frame installed within the higher part of the housing, reinforcing it so it can't break (that housing is notorious for breaking) -- it mounts to the transmission tunnel, and the armrest then bolts to the top of the frame via six small holes you've drilled through the plastic housing. The nifty thing is that the armrest conceals two "trays" (for forward passengers and rear passengers), and when they slide out they each reveal a double cup holder. Of course, it swings up out of the way, as well as down for comfort.

It's no longer sold, but you can sometimes find them on eBay (as I did) -- they're sometimes referred to on this forum as the Holy Grail!

They're in the car outside, and it's drizzling (freezing) -- I'll try to remember and post a picture tomorrow in daylight.

        Regards,

          hi ken
volvo also made one simular to the one you describe.
removal of the e-brake cover is necessary to mount a bracket that holds the armrest.
          very rare
          good luck

            I don't think it had cupholders .... 200 1986

Yes, I have a Volvo accessory catalog that show what looks like the Husco armrest when the cupholders are hidden. It has six adjustable positions, but no cupholders. P/n 1129148, -035, 059, or 060, depending on color choice.

              hi ken
yes the volvo armrest for the later 240s had front and rear cupholders. they actually used a 700/900 series armrest with a special bracket and clip down tab.
i had one but sold it. daveshan also has one.
i only ever seen one in person but others here have them.
              good luck
