power steering reservoir 200 1986

Is there a rubber washer or some sort of seal under the power steering reservoir cap? Mine leaks like a sieve around the cap....is the cap vented perhaps? I am low on fluid every 200miles or so and the pump moans and the steering wheel creaks when I turn it...this is becoming a real pain in the ass. lucas brand fluid helped but now that the temp has dropped that stuff is unacceptable as it is nearly solid at 40 degrees F. I am thinking of making a seal for under the cap out of a piece of innertube...I just want to make sure that this won't cause a pressure buildup that could damage anything

There is really not much pressure in the reservior, or shouldn't be. It is just a square box fith a flat bottom. Inlet, outlet (lower hose) and fill cap.

ATF expands quite a bit as it heats up, so having the reservoir filled to the "Hot" line when the car is cold could force fluid out the cap.

Good Luck,

Bob

i just went out to the car and checked mine.

no gasket. no leaks.

are you sure fluid is leaving via the cap?

drops, or indication, on the ground? fluid can accumulate inside the boots too.

i dont think the p/s is under super high pressure (for example, i cut into the line to install a magnetic filter, no leaks) so a home made gasket may do the trick.

still, what you describe seems very odd.

i suggest inspecting the entire p/s system.

I am pretty certain that the cap is where the leak is...in the cold weather the fluid actually stays on the top of the reservoir around the cap. It does run down the hoses and a few drops are on the ground, but I think that that cap is the source of the leak. thanks for the advise.

Yes it has a gasket. You could also just cut the belt for the pump. Builds the triceps!!

thanks. the belt cut is the emergency road side repair I hope that i never have to make.

PS....changed the steering rack boots....no leaks there
