Heater Blower Motor 200 1979

1979 242DL, B21F. After solving the problem of having an oil light on when the ignition is off and having extremely delayed idiot lights (both due to corroded and melted engine wiring harness) I've come to the issue of a heater blower staying on after the ignition has been turned off. If the heater control knob is left on 1,2,3 the blower will stay on after I've taken the key out of the ignition. I have to remember to manual ensure the blower is off before leaving the car.

Would this be another wiring issue or an ignition switch problem? Thanks so much!

    Yes.

The blower motor will start with the key in pos I. I don't have the foggiest reason why it is designed like that. If you are having ignition sw problems, why not just change out the sw? It is very easy to do.

Well I guess I like to ensure that something is actually wrong with a part before I replace it. In any case, would you happen to have a description of how to replace the ignition switch? All that I have seen describes those where the ignition is on the steering column. Mine is on the dash.

More than likely, it is a bad wire.
The ignition sw is easy to get to (?) so long as you don't mind lying on your back with your head next to the brake peddle :) Take off the kick plate and assume the position. Directly behind the key will be a round connector with 6 or 7 wires connected to it. Un plug it and remove the 2 screws and the aluminum housed switch will fall down on your nose. Putting it back in is harder than taking it out.

If you have had burned wires in the engine area, you might have missed one. And the easiest way to find it is to use a multimeter and check for continuity. Also follow the wires for the fan from the switch toward the battery. The wire will be "hot", eventhough the fan is in the off position. Pull the fuse for the fan and if the fan no longer works, the problem is before the fuse, on the battery side.

Have you ever cleaned the fuse panel? It gets really ugly looking after 30 years.

As I remember, the oil light on with ignition off was due to bad/missing insulation inside the under-the-engine-front harness. The fat red wire is always hot, so if the black oil sensor wire made electrical contact with it, the light would get power through was is supposed to be the ground side, and it could ground somewhere.

So lets look at the blower fan switch. Somewhere there is 12v positive getting to a place its not supposed to be.

IIRC the 1979 did not have a connection to the D/61+ lead to the alternator (that's the thin red wire) that started a 10sec timer to delay the compressor clutch engagement until the engine had run for that time. That wire could be another "leak" to check.

There is a connection to the a/c wiring, so when next the blower remains on "llegally", turn the a/c knob past the "click" and turn it back of off. Any change?

    Good Luck,

    Bob

I'll try it out. Don't have a/c on this old volvo however, so I dont know how that will work.

Just for more info...Once I was able to jiggle the key in the ignition and the blower went off.
