Winter mode 900 1993

I have a '93 960 sedan. Yesterday, after sitting in 0-20F weather for 2-3 days, my husband had trouble with it. The indicator lights on the gearshift console came on and cycled continuously through the E,S,and W. The dashboard indicator was also on, and he had a hard time getting the car out of winter mode, was only able to get it into sport. I have had no problems before. Do you think it's coincidence that it happened after being in the frigid temperatures or is it a more serious problem. Haven't driven it since.

A potential temporary solution is to 'row' the shifter from P to L with the engine off, key on, foot on the brake. This sometimes cleans the contacts on the Park Neutral Position (PNP) Sensor enough to make things work correctly temporarily.

If you or someone you know are a DIY'er there are instructions in the 900 FAQ's, as well I can send you a set of procedures that I wrote up. The part costs about $110-135 depending on were you get it.

Classic signs of a bad pnp switch, it will grow worse until the engine will not start. The pnp switch is located on the transmission.

If you replace the switch, the problem will go away. If not, over time it will get worse and then be forced to do so. It is not expensive and easy for the DIY.
