Winter mode 900 1993

I have a '93 960 sedan. Yesterday, after sitting in 0-20F weather for 2-3 days, my husband had trouble with it. The indicator lights on the gearshift console came on and cycled continuously through the E,S,and W. The dashboard indicator was also on, and he had a hard time getting the car out of winter mode, was only able to get it into sport. I have had no problems before. Do you think it's coincidence that it happened after being in the frigid temperatures or is it a more serious problem. Haven't driven it since.
