The last thought you should have is about a bad solenoid, they are mighty tough. Typically, the problem you are describing is due to a failing OD relay, or heaven forbid, the 2 foot long piece of wire that runs to the solenoid from the floor board. So far, I've found that the wire to the solenoid is highly susceptible to insulation rot and I've even seen a few that got caught up in the drive shaft. The most likely issue though is the OD relay... take the cover off of it, clean the contact points, and resolder each and every joint. This might just save you $30+ bucks or so for a used bad relay.
