Does this backfire take place on a running engine or a starting engine? Does it really blow the intake manifold off or just the large rubber hoses on the intake.
Mine had a backfire for a short time on start up and would sometimes blow off the little hose attached to the idle speed valve. Turned out the fuel pressure valve was bad and raw fuel would leak into the manifold from the vacuum hose.
Maybe your timing is off a little. Check your marks.
