Opinions on 2.9 liter six used in the 960's ?? 200

Any of the 200 guys have opinions about the 2.9 liter six they put in the 960's?? I posted also on the 900 section, but no response so far. My wife wants to go look at one today. It has 212k. Reputation? Durability? DIY friendly? Reliability? Longevity? Cost of repairs and maintenance? We've had about always had 4-cylinder 200 series Volvos so that's what we're used to.

What I finally decided after reading a ton of posts was that they finally got all the bugs out of the straight six engine in '95 or '96 HOWEVER the engine still has the capability of destroying a timing belt even with good diligent maintenance. Some mechanics I talk with have advised against getting any of those six-cylinder engines under any circumstances, period.

What I came away with was, if I ever want a rear drive Volvo and 240s are too old or too hard to find, go with a '93-94 940 or a 940 turbo, which I'm pretty sure had it's last year in '95.

    Doug:

The only real negative I've heard of is the timing belt tensioner which appears to be the same or similar to the S60/V70 tensioner... they have been known to fail before the timing belt does with the same valve bending results. Make sure you replace the tensioner when you do the TB and you should be okay, wouldn't hurt too much to do the job a few K miles early either.

    Hey Doug,

We made the same "leap" in May of 2005. Bought a 1997 965 with 128K off eBay. Not before I had read every 960 post on the BB for years and knew a little about what to look for.

Car had ALL maintenance records from the "Birthing" Volvo dealer. Well, none earlier than 55K, those had been purged. T-belt chnged at 125K.

There are a large number of changes after the 1994 models, front end body style and more. I would not get one older than 1995. I would have preferred a 1998 V90, but none available in my price range.

Engine is a 6-cylinder version of the 5-cyinder 850 cars, so the technology (in 1997) was not new. DO NOT GET A FIRST YEAR VOLVO (or anything else, I expect) even first year 240s with first year FI 240s were crazy. BTDT

It will require more attention than a red block, and LOVES synthetic oil. I run 5W-30 winter, 5W-40 summer. Engine IS interference, making attention to timing belt, tensioner, and serpentine belt wanting your inspection frequently. Do not let a belt change mileage go by. Dealer estimates a t-belt change at $600. T-belt failure = new/used engine, maybe $2500.

Get some of the Volvo "Green" Service manuals and learn DIY things. Engine, body interior and exterior, wiring diagrams, more if you have the $$$. Be SURE to get the Owner's Manual, along with all the records.

Computers all over, ECU, ICM, ABS, Tranny, ACC, probably more I can't name. Wiring digram is more like an airplane. Whole car schematic would probably cover a wall. Two bulb failure warning system relays, rear and front. Multiple fuse and relay locations and boxes.

Very quite, very powerful, very smooth. Check the rear suspension, many have the Nivomat self-levelling shocks. Replacement is not cheap. Mine are pretty plain, just got the Monroes on it from Sears. It is odd seeing the rear axle gear housing glommed up on the floorboards, and little drive shafts with boots coming out the sides. But, it is IRS, which partly accounts for the nice ride.

Remember the car has MUCH lower ground clearance, and it 5 inches wider that your 240s. Still has that Great turning circle, though.

Get used to no distributor, no coil, no high tension wires.

Post your Q in the S90/V90 forum, too.

    Good Luck,

    Bob

Try the S/V-90 forum as well for 960 specific stuff. Also, check out the "buying a XXX" and "960" sections in the FAQ. While more complicated than the 240, they're supposedly very DIY-able.

There are some very knowledgeable 960 folks on SwedishBricks.
