Inga's Not Breathing so good in the Block so it seems, guidance sought! 200 1986

Hello Bricksters,

Friday afternoon walking out from work to Inga (86 245DL 206K saw an good size oil stain on under the car. Popped the hood saw oil sprayed all over the drivers side of the hood. The oil dipstick was popped up about 3 inches and first glance that would seem to be the problem, plugged it back in checked the oil level (1/2 quart needed) and drove home. Taking a closer look at home saw the tell tale signs of oil seeping from around the valve cover. Pulled the flametrap and it was dirty and restricted, but not completly clogged. Picked up a new flametrap from the local Euro Parts House on the way out of town (in the wifes car) yesterday and installed it this morning. Found the big hose had the start of a good split and a lot of crap in it. Could not find a hose big enough to replace it at a Auto Parts house, so pulled one in good shape from pick ur parts this morning and installed it (got genuine Volvo volt meter also). The small hose was clear and in good shape. Will get a new hose this week.

Inga still seems to have a pressure issue in her block. Did the Metal Oil Cap rattle check per the 740 FAQ and it rattles like a pressure cooker regulator. Checked for a vacuum on the small hose and there is. But it seems that the block is not getting good positive pressure you can feel air moving upwards when you put your hand over the oil cap opening. The idle is smooth and has not been an issue by the way.

Going to order a new breater box and oring tomorrow from the stealership. After reading the 740 FAQ, that seems to be the next step. Before the BB days did not not about the flame trap and blew out the rear engine seal and every other seal for that matter. So do not want anything like that again. Oh and will get the oring for the dipstick from the dealer.

So besides the breather box is what else needs to be checked?

Also found the long sought after 86 good engine harness today (dance of joy) so this may become a even bigger job like pulling the intake manifold to replace the harness. That apparently would make access the breather box a lot easier. It was a good day at the PUP thanks to a new 86 244DL just arriving.

Thanks in advance for your help, guidance, warnings, and advise. Igna sits for a couple of days until we get this resolved.

PT

If all else seems open I would suspect the oil separator as you suggest. You can put any hose that fits on the opening the flame trap tube connects to and blow into it. If the oil cap is off you should have unrestricted air flow through the oil separator. Even a bit of restriction seems to be enough to blow seals out.

While at the dealer getting the dipstick Oring and oil separator you should probably also pick up the Oring that goes between the separator and the block, the one in there now will be toast.

That one is on the part list, 33mm x3mm

The crud in the hose going to the throttle body as almost cystaline in nature. Bet that breater box is full of the same.

Thanks for the tip,

PT
