Odd Radio Problem 200 1989

Last year I installed a cheepo cd/radio in place of the original factory radio/tape player. It works fine but about once a month, when I turn it on its dead. Nothing, no lights nothing.
If I the remove gauge blanks next to the radio and reach in and disconnect the large factory plug or pull the fuse from the back of the radio, wait a few moments and put it back in, it will work fine for another month or two.

I thought maybe it was a bad unit so I took it back and go a new one, same thing.
Its not the end of the world, just a little annoying. Anyone had this happen?

When I did the original install I remember that I added a ground wire, i think the factory unit uses the chassis ground for the speakers or something.

Sounds like Master Reset (turning off and reapply of power) solves your problem. What that does is reset the computer inside the radio. So most likely that is issue you are having. Maybe double check the crimps on the constant power (Yellow or Yellow Black) and switched power (Red) for a loose connection in the crimp. Check for a loose crimp on the Black wire on the ground connection.

The only reason to add another ground is sometimes you can reduce hiss or humm adding a chassis connection connection from your receiver to an external amp. But since this is a all in one not an issue.

Easy change out is to buy the same brand of radio and take the old one out and add the new one in. No connector change out and is quickly done.

    Good Luck,

    PT

I did swap the radio out for a new one, same model, and had the same problem.
I remember the instructions for this radio mentioned that I could not use the chassis ground for the speaker - terminal. So i did not.

Wow! If you can reach in those gauge blanks and reach stuff, your hands must be even skinnier than mine! (and mine are mighty skinny!) :-)

The problem with your radio is likely with the radio itself. Pulling fuses and harness connectors interrupts the constant 12 volt current (that runs the clock and memory) and likely resets some parameter that's "confusing" the radio. Sort of like how curing problems with Windows can be done by restarting the computer. Bet if you pulled the fuse (that supplies constant 12V - different from the one for the radio proper) from the fuse box, or disconnected the battery you'd have the same result.

The original radio should have a single ground (and the speakers ground through that via the radio itself).

      LOL,

OK I left out the Windows Ref from Master Reset, but that is where the term comes from.

As a matter of fact the joke is that when IT help comes on the phone, no matter what your problem is, well the conversation goes something like this:

Hello ____ Laptop support what can we help you with today?

My laptop screen has come detached from the rest of the computer and now has a large crack down the middle, can you send someone over to fix it?

They reply in that monotone voice, well lets try a couple of things first, have you turned your computer off and turned it back on? And when you do does that make any difference?

You can insert an accent from a large populated far eastern country to make it sound more realistic.
