Odd Radio Problem 200 1989

Last year I installed a cheepo cd/radio in place of the original factory radio/tape player. It works fine but about once a month, when I turn it on its dead. Nothing, no lights nothing.
If I the remove gauge blanks next to the radio and reach in and disconnect the large factory plug or pull the fuse from the back of the radio, wait a few moments and put it back in, it will work fine for another month or two.

I thought maybe it was a bad unit so I took it back and go a new one, same thing.
Its not the end of the world, just a little annoying. Anyone had this happen?

When I did the original install I remember that I added a ground wire, i think the factory unit uses the chassis ground for the speakers or something.
