You have to determine whether the two belts driving the alternator and water pump are still there.
If they are shredded or broken, you've driven a ways without coolant circulating. It's possible no damage was done. It's also possible that the head gasket suffered.
See whether everything is mechanically intact under the hood. If it's ok, then you've got electrical issues to deal with around the alternator.
Even though 1988 cars had the upgraded wiring harness material, the wires still get stiff, brittle, and corroded. Look for damage to the little red wire to the rear of the alternator, the blue ground wire (hard to see, on the bottom) and the big red power lead. Failure of any of these will result in loss of charging, which should cause all the warning lights to go on.
Good luck with it!
