Lower wishbone bushes 120-130 1963

My Haynes manual is pretty confusing where it describes replacing the lower wishbone bushes. For a start it indicates special bushes that should be used if your car has radials. They are identified in a figure as having 3 slots in the flange end. I haven't been able to find reference to any different part numbers for these bushes. Should they be something different for radials?

The text of in the Haynes manual says that both bushes should be pressed in with the flange towards the rear. This doesn't seem to tie up with the figures which show the front one with the flange forward and the back with the flange backwards (which is how is appears to be on my car).

I haven't checked the green book yet but does anyone have experience with any special lower wishbone bushs for radials? Which way should the flanges face?

when i did mine i had a heck of a time with the large bolt securing these two bushings. In hammering it out i messed up the threads on both sides and had to have the bolt rethreaded at the same time the bushings were getting pressed in. after this experience i found that these bolts could be ordered from a couple places, so you might check into that as well before you have you entire underside dismantled, oh and be careful with the coils theres alot of forc e in those things.

I looked in the Green Book and several parts catalogs. I think what the Haynes manual is telling you is that the early cars (B16) had a different lower A-arm assembly. They shared bushing type with the upper A-arm. So, if you had one of these, it would be readily apparent; bushings for the late cars (B18) would not fit an early A-arm and vise-versa.

As far as mounting the bushings, it is obvious the flanges go to the "outside" rather than the "rear".

I was aware that earlier cars use the same bushes on the lower wishbone that all cars use on the upper wishbone. The Haynes manual only covers the 120 series from 1961 so the earlier type is not described. The exact quote from Haynes manual is:

"In the lower wishbone the flanges of both the bushes face the rear of the vehicle (i.e; the flange of the front bush is on the inside of the wishbone and the flange oof the back bush is on the outside.)"

It goes on to describe installation of different lower wishbone bushes if you have radials:

"For the lower wishbone only, different bushes are needed for cars fitted with radial tyres than for cross-ply. The Fig. 11.14 shows what a radial ply bush looks like and shows what position the lowest recess should occupy."

I agree that it doesn't make sense to fit the bushes with both flanges facing to the rear. My green book is dated 1963 but only shows the early type lower wishbone (bushes clamped in with U bolts).

I would post a scan of Fig. 11.14 but I can't upload an image at the moment for some reason. The bushes in the figure have three equi-spaced radial slots in the flange face.

I'm still keen to know if anyone has experience or information from any other source that might mention installing with both bushes facing the rear or any different bushes that should be used for with radial tyres. Maybe Haynes is just plain wrong on both counts.

I did some cut and paste from a parts list and the Green Book I have. It is kind of rough because of the losses in the cut&paste and the "free" PDF writer. But it shows the set-up good enough to see the layout.
