There is no contact on the tranny, just the gear selector contacts.
Did you use a voltmeter to check for the presence of 12 volts at the light contact point when the shifter is in "R" and the key is on II?
If none, check the connector that you should find near the driver's left toe (assuming left-hand drive). It is a square 9-pin type with all positions used. Pull the knee pad. You may have to look down in the galvanized metal wire loom cover. That may require pulling back the carpet.
Look for connector with these wires:
top row:......GR / R-Y / 2xGN
middle row:....2xBL / W / Y-Gr
Bottom row:....Y / BL-R / SB
SB is black, and that one is the back-up lights power.
FYI the others are
GR .... Fuel gauge
R-Y ... Main fuel pump
GN .... 2 wires, Left turn signal, front and rear
BL .... 2 wires, Right turn signal, front & rear
W ..... Rear fog light(s)
Y-GR .. Left brake light
Y ..... Right brake light
BL-R .. Tailgate washer
SB .... Back-up lights
Look at the connector for signs of overheating. The main fuel pump has a large current draw. A little corrosion in the contacts raises resistance which raises heat which raises resistance with raises ..., etc., etc., etc.
This information is from my Volvo Service Manual Wiring Diagrams for 240 1985. I have found the WDMs for my Volvos to be very very helpful. Highly recommend that you get one, www.volvotechinfo.com or call 1-800-25-VOLVO.
Good Luck,
Bob
