It's no fun pulling an old windshield, especially when you're trying to preserve the decorative trim on the older cars. It's easy to start a crack on the edge when you're getting it out of the car, and cracks in windshield glass always seem to spread. And the plastic clips holding the trim in place get really brittle with age. I was never able to find new clips when I was working on mine and still thinking about using old glass.
I finally had the windshield on my '82 replaced with new glass. The new glass from the later models is a direct fit and has a smooth, flush gasket in place of the decorative trim. One benefit to going with new glass is that eliminating the trim cuts the wind noise way down. Also, those little pits that accrue to any windshield with road debris and grit impact can make the glass really hard to see through. The visibility through old glass can be so reduced gradually over time that you may not notice it until you replace the glass. A new windshield can make and old car seem like new again.
If you find a good piece of old glass and decide to go that way, be sure to inspect it really thoroughly before you pour your afternoon into pulling it. Little cracks will spread.
Good luck with it!
