console light at shifter 900 1997

Thanks to some good people for any help. I have a 97 960 Volvo sedan. The console light for the gear shifter is not lighting up, I would like to check the bulb. I do not see any screws or tabs to release the cover on the console, is there some kind of trick to it? I would also like to check the dash switch for the sun roof because it does not light up either. If you know how to fix this bit of trouble, please share it with me.
Thanks, chevy2740

I don't know if those little integrated bulbs/holders are available anywhere else, but if you go to the Volvo dealer, strap a mattress to your back so you won't hurt yourself when the partsman tells you the price and you faint.

$13.50 USD each. (Hughes Volvo, Santa Barbara, CA, March 2003)

I now cut off the burnt-out ones from the harness in the 940, and splice in the holders (and replaceable bulbs) from pre-1988 700-series cars.

Hello, Torqs 25 and remove the console lid, you don't have to remove it, but I have broken the lower console 4 times because I didn't and I remove first thing now. Remove the ash tray. Remove the rear ashtray. Remove the back panel for the ashtray, two tabs on bottom that need to be pulled up and the panel out. Remove the cover inside the console, pry it up with a screw driver, remove the two screws. Remove the small panel below the e-brake two more screws under it. remove both panels from under steering wheel and under glove compartment. Remove the 5/16 bolt or the torqs 25 screw on each side lower corner of console. Remove the thin clip in front under ashtray. Slide the center console back a bit and remove wire from mode selector switch. slide it back as far as it will go and pull up lightly. the bulb will pull out of the housing. The new bulb has the base and bulb all in one. Push the new bulb in the socket and reverse steps. Pauli

Have the same car and I've never seen a light at the gear shift location except the mode light; either there's no light there or mine is also burned out. Let me also know.

I went down stairs and found that I run the dash dimmer reostat so low I couldn't see the light; It's there when I turn it up. Just never noticed.

I have a 960 1992 and there's no light at the shifter. I just went through the hell of having some work done on the shifter. The mechanic had trouble getting in there and the side panels don't fit well now and it generally looks funky.

Hello, He tried to cut corners I think. 92 to 94 is much easier than the newer 95 and up. Its not that difficult to take apart. Pauli
