Torque Values S90-V90

I got my Chilton s90 manual today was disappointed that it didn't have all the torque values. So I did some research and found the torque values that I was looking for. So I wanted to pass them on in case someone else needs them as well.

Spark Plugs: 17.3 - 20.3 Ft lbs. Also, it's important to put the anti-seize on the new plugs.

Oil Drain Plug: 44 Ft lbs. However, a discussion on Brickboard said various people used 30-40 lbs. Also, many people said they replaced the 'crush' washer each time.

Transmission Drain Plug: I'd guess its the same as the Old Drain Plug--but I'm not sure.

Best Regards,
Stan

Volvo lists the Oil Pan Drain Plug Torque Spec as 26 ft. lbs.

    NOT 44.

Hello, on Brickboard there was a discussion about that a while back. Many people had said that 26 proved to low and said it was best to torque it up to 44 lbs. I don't know what's best--just relaying what I read.

      Best Regards,
      Stan

        Hi Stan,

These are aluminum pans and if the proper gasket is used on the drain plug, 26 ft. lbs. should work just fine. I use less than that and don't have any leaks on either of our two B6304's.

I just didn't want you over cranking the plug and stripping out the threads in the oil pan.

          hello DEWFPO,
That's a help--thanks. My Chilton's didn't have the torque value and I was getting conflicting information on the net. I'll follow your advice.

          Best Regards,
          Stan

Hi, Why don`t you do what is suggested by the makers? Torque is obtained by the type of metal type of thread and the size of the thread for optimum tightness. It is not decided by people having a discussion! Most of the questions put on this board are because owners never take any notice of what Volvo say.The next thing will be how to mend a stripped bolt hole in a 960 engine sump pan? Also i read about spares from different manufacturers always letting them down, and they have only just replaced that part.Surely if you have paid extra for your nice Volvo then why not use Volvo parts even if they are more expensive, you will only need them the once.To buy a cheaper part and replace it soon after again as it wears quicker is surely idiot! We have the same thing over here with different manufacturers, in reality you only get what you pay for, whatever it is. Regards

Not sure of the values either but one thing for sure, the trans plug and the crankcase plug are no where the same in torque values. You would see that the moment you were able to compare them. There is a crush washer on the trans too, replace them with each removal. It is cheap way to keep the driveway and garage floor clean.

Can't answer all the questions but when you can buy filters for $3.50 and washers for .30 from FCPGroton, I replace the washer at every oil change.
Why take chances with a leak. There are some that keep using them over and over with no problems. I'm just not that cheap.

Hi, I have changed my engine oil quite a few times now and have used the same washer. I don`t have any leaks at the plug , but then my washer is better quality, it is a Volvo one. My dealer will give you a washer for nothing if you ask for one,i have one but never used it, it`s still in the kitchen draw.
