240 overheating 200 1990

My daughter's 1990 240 DL has an overheating problem. This only occurs when the outside temperature is 85 degrees +. The gauge will start to climb toward red but as soon as you turn the heater on, the gauge will return to normal range. I have replaced the radiator and thermostat. The water pump is also recent. There is no external electric auxiliary cooling fan and the existing fan attached to the water pump appears to be okay. Any suggestions?

P.S.: My younger daughter's 91 240 has an auxilliary electric cooling fan and no overheating problems. Was this fan an aftermarket add on or a Volvo option?

    Like the others, I would say it's the Compensation Board in the Gauge Cluster. What bothers me is your statement that it starts to climb (Only) when outside temps are 85 and better.

    Do the compensation board jumper and let us know how you make out.

    Unless there is a very bad clog within the engine, I can't imagine how a new radiator and T-stat wouldn't solve any Overheating issue.

    It could be the temp comp board. Nice bandwagon to jump on. But they usually put the needle in the red randomly, not pulled back down by turning on the heater; not just when the outside air is warmer. If it is the temp comp board terminal oxide problem, it usually responds well to a whack on the dash.

    The 91 added the AC helper fan in front of the condenser - you'll notice the AC is entirely different between 90 and 91.

    The fan clutch could be a problem, but you'll see this in slow traffic and at long lights, and not when cruising.

    You say you've replaced the rad and thermostat. Was that a response to this issue, or just recent work unrelated?

      It was in response to this issue but it was done in cold weather. Problem didn't return until weather warmed up.

    Nine times out of ten, an "alleged overheat" is due to the temperature gauge compensation board failing. In short, the engine temp is fine and the temp gauge is lying to you! Check the archive on how to bypass the compensation board which is located in the lower right hand corner of the instrument cluster.

    This is an easy job, 2 hours tops, and I can assure you that you won't regret it!

      Listen to Jorrell, I bypassed the board last summer on my daughters 240 best thing you could do. I had her turning on the heat annd lowering the windows when the gauge ran to the red. Poor kid was dying from the heat until someone told me about the compensator problem...

      Just to be sure, get ahold of a thermal thermostat and when it starts to climb pull over and point it at the radiator just to see what the temp is at.

        I need one of those too - are they available at any old auto parts store, or do I need to go somewhere special/particular to get the infrared thermometer?

          Any auto parts store should have one. My son just got me one for Father's day; $22.99. Now I have to make the 300 mile trip to my daughter's place and use the thermometer to see of the car is actually getting hot. If not,I'll try the comp board fix.

          You can find a cheapie IR thermometer hanging on the pegboard in a blister pack at your neighborhood Sears, for starters.

          Since I use my 245 for towing on a regular basis, I installed a mechanical temp guage. It is amazing to see just how far off the original is.

              There is a port on the head just behind the last intake runner that I used. It is somewhat difficult to get the plug out, but I practiced on one of my other heads first. I have a picture somewhere in the files that I will try to post this evening.
