85 240 Power steering hoses 200

On my 1985 Wagon, that I've only had for 3 weeks now and haven't had a ton of time to fix it just yet (my work schedule is slowing down till September, I believe that I need to replace at least one hose on my power steering. From my perspective (albeit, thats not saying a lot) it appears as though the one I have to replace isn't the correct kind.

What is the diameter of the hoses? Should the two of them be the same?

One I have is (I think) 3/8ths, and the other seems to be bigger (maybe 5/8) and of a different kind of sheath. The larger of the two (which is the bottom of the two coming out of the reservoir) seems to have the ATF seeping through the hose itself. I'm kinda hoping that would explain why there seems to be a gunk around that part of the engine. I'm hypothesizing that the incorrect hose was put on, and that the ATF is eating through the hose.

You are correct on the sizes on the reservoir hoses, one is 3/8" and the other 5/8". They should be proper trans cooler line/ps system spec hoses, not just fuel line rated, and certainly not heater hose.

The 5/8" can be hard to locate, my local NAPA still stocks it in bulk.

85 240 Power steering hoses (new question) 200

Ok, call me dumb, but I've done a little searching online, and I'm getting a little confused about things. I hear about a "pressure hose" (which is about 100 bucks) and the other one being a "return" hose. Now, both hoses off of the reservoir are just your regular run of the mill hoses. I can't imagine them being worth 100 bucks.

Especially when I can get the 3/8th inch hose at a local auto store for about 10-15 bucks. It's the 5/8th inch hose that I have a harder time finding. That one can't be the "pressure" hose, can it? There is a hose with a metal hose attached to something else, and I'm assuming thats the pressure hose.

What should the 3/8th and 5/8th inch hoses cost?

the smaller diameter pressure hose is already "made up" with fittings on the ends. the larger diameter hose is sold by the foot - you reuse your fitting at the rack end - it attaches with a hose clamp - I believe the top end fits onto the fuel pump reservoir and is also held with a hose clamp.
i've used advance auto hoses a couple of times over the past five years or so and they've held up.

I understand the pressure hose being it's own hose (with footings, etc) but there is a 2nd hose (thats 5/8th inch) that is confusing me.

for an 85, you should have a pump with a separate reservoir.
you'd have the pressure hose with fittings that goes from the pump to the steering rack, then a return hose that goes from the rack to the fluid reservoir.
there's a shorter hose that feeds fluid from the reservoir into the pump.
would that be the 5/8th hose you're talking about?
