Timing belt issues 700

Hi All,

I have a few questions about a B230F timing belt job.

1 Where is the timing mark on the crankshaft , is it the crankshaft keyway?
my Chiltons and Haynes are fuzzy about this.
2. There was some weeping down onto the water pump from around the cam seal,
I'm unsure if it was from the cam seal or a pair of engine plugs just below the cam seal- do these things ever leak? I replaced all three seals
and wonder if these plugs need treatment too?
3 When installing the water pump, should I just use the rubber gaskets or
does it need silicone sealant as well, it seems there was some silicone
on the old pump.

Thanks, B.B.

Hi there,

Regarding your water pump install, I'm persuaded to use nothing at all on the paper gasket, although I can't see what harm some tack adhesive would do. My experience is with 240 series cars.

On the heater return pipe, I install the ring on the pipe close to the crimp, then "lube" the ring and water pipe inside with a thin smear of red RTV. I do the same for the seal that mates with the head. I believe it is important to clean the mating surfaces at the pipe, head and block.

I've seen core plugs weep coolant but not seen the screw in plugs leak oil.

Thanks Art,

Nice pictures, (How do you up load them) Those are the plugs that may
have been weeping coolant here, should I do something with them?
I was concerned to change out the timing belt before it was due because
of all the leaking dripping on the water pump, but none of that mess got
on the belt. It was hard to tell if the mess was oil or coolant.

Bill
