960 probably electrical problems

Okay, so my dad got a 960 and we basically don't know what we're doing...

What we have is a 960 with a brand new head, very likely correct timing, and absolutely no start.

Problems:
-Makes a glugging noise when cranking(don't know what this means).
-Can't tell if it sparks but it doesn't smell like it.
-Makes fuel pressure, but no idea if it makes enough or sends injector signals.
-Cranks slow, but I don't know if that's a 960 thing or a broken 960 thing.
-Tach used to jump all over the place but has ceased doing anything anymore.
-Makes a bit of a squeaking noise when cranking(again, no idea what this means).
-Does not even seem to fire any cylinders at all and some times but very rarely backfires.

What we really really need:
-Some ideas of what electrical signals to test with the volt meter.
-VERY VERY SPECIFIC descriptions of the ground wire locations, as we probably bought it from a very incompetent mechanic (they seem to be out to kill me).
-Ground wire locations that are not just wiring diagrams (since those CAN'T show the physical location of the wire).
-Anything else you deem helpful.

Sorry if this seems cut and dry, but this car has been sitting for an annoying long amount of time.

    960 probably electrical problems 900

    Pagemaster,

I thought my previous post might bring some attention to your problems and get you some help. I'll bump your post to the top again to see if anyone can offer any advice on the 960. I don't know much about the 960 cars. I would probably mislead you if I offered specific help.

But, in order to get help you are going to have to do some detective work and then ask direct questions. You asked for specific answers but you posted very vague statements about the problem. For instance, "...very likely correct timing..." means nothing to a would be helper. Is the timing correct or is it not? Do you know how to check the timing?

Did you and your dad get a non-running car as a father and son project? You said that neither of you know what you are doing. Do you mean that neither of you know this car or do you mean that neither of you know any car? Is this to be a learning exercise?

Every post you make will be read by several people. The problem is that most folks don't have time to wade through all the posts on the board and will look for the ones that are posted directly to the areas they are interested in. Here is some information you need to provide with every post:

What year is the car? Six cylinder or four? Standard or automatic? It does make a difference. There were different fuel injection control systems used and different ignition systems too. Also, post directly to the 900 forum and make sure to choose the year from the drop down box so it will showup on the subject line; not many people read the entire RWD forum.

Make a separate post for each question you have. Be prepared to answer questions that come up to the best of your ability to do so. Be ready to go out to the car to make checks that will be suggested so you can post back the results.

I know it has a new head because you told me that. Why was the head replaced? Why did the previous owner give it up before it was running?

Why do you suspect wiring and grounds? Do you have a specific reason for it?

Do you have a shop manual for the car? If not, you really need to start the troubleshooting process by getting one.

As for ground locations, make a separate post to the 900 forum with a good identification of the car and I think someone can provide that information.

Good luck with the project. I know how frustrating it can be to not make any headway.

I really can't help much. But I want to thank you for an entertaining post; it was the first chuckle I've had all day. ;-)

The only guidance I can offer is to find a Volvophile close enough to you to help you out. Offer him beer for showing up and lots of beer and a steak dinner if he gets it running.
