How far can you be off! 900

I'm off 60 degrees on my timing on my crnkshaft pully counterclockwise on a 16 valve b234f engine I just rebuilt. It idles rough but runs up to 70 - 80 mph and starts right up. Am I off a teeth or two on the crankshaft and would it even run if I where? Any comment would be appreciated.

Your harmonic balancer crankshaft pulley has failed and should be replaced otherwise it will start to screech. The timing is looked after by the ignition system using the crank position sensor in the bell housing and is not adjustable, so don't worry about that. Adjustment of the timing belt and balance shaft belt is a bigger concern. The timing mark scribed across the crankshaft pulley is no longer reliable for any purpose and in fact may have been off a bit when the belts were last installed. If you've observed noticeably poor engine performance then that is a good reason to suspect a timing belt alignment problem. There is an article in the FAQ describing timing belt maintenance including hazards, installation and alignment procedures for the B234F. As it stands now, you cannot use the harmonic balancer pulley to align the engine to TDC. Unless you can accurately achieve TDC by some other means then there is no point in checking or touching the timing belt until the harmonic balancer pulley has been replaced. Remember, when you set/check timing belt alignment everything must be accurate to within one tooth so be sure to sight the pulley marks straight on, especially the crank pulley (hint: use a mirror).

you can check the alignment marks on the camshaft pulley and the crank shaft pulley-
a really good visual is located at http://www.swedishbricks.net/700900FAQ/Engine-SealsBeltsVent1.html#Changing%20Timing%20Belt:%20Procedures

I am not sure, but I don't think you can be that far off timing and the engine still starts.

Also check the spark plug wires on the dist. that they are correctly placed.
I'd check the simple things first...Idle adjustment switch,
    cap, rotor, etc....
    Hope this helps.
