Rough idle SOLVED. 200 1985

Today was a good day for the 85.

History. Would start and stall immediately, needed gas pedal to keep running until fully warm, very rough idle, poor milage,. Loosing coolant internally and leaking oil.

Compression test revealed #3 low. Replaced head gasket and adjusted valves.

Cured low compression, fluid loss, leaking oil. Idle improved a bit but was still pretty rough. Still had hard starting and stall problem.

Today I found....The Power Brake Booster is leaking...on a hunch I had driving to my shop today, when I stopped, I waited about a minute and tried the brakes with the engine OFF. Very hard pedal when design is to have one or two assisted stops with the engine off.

Clamped the booster vacuum hose off and had a smooth idle. Released clamp and darn near killed the engine until it cault itself and stayed running rough.

Now to find a reasonable booster cannister.

If you are lucky it may just be the white one way vacuum check valve on the booster. Dan

The valve is designed to hold the vacuum after it is created in the booster and the engine is shut off.

I could not hold vacuum in the booster direct to the booster without the valve. Rubber bladder has a hole or tear internally.

I thought the vacuum was created by the engine.

Either way, excess air appears to be entering via the booster into the engine, leaning things out and causing a rough idle.

Yes, for practical purposes, but interesting philosophically. The creation of nothing. Lousy job pulling a booster in the junkyard.
