Synthetic Oil - Flame Trap 200 1989

So I switched over to synthetic oil in the '88 244...kind of pricey, but I feel good about it. Do I still need the FLAME TRAP?? I understand that the crankcase ventilation system is necessary - after twice changing seals I definitely understand that - but do I need the little white plastic flame arrestor if I'm running synthetic? Is hot synthetic flammable?

Thanks...

ANSWER Synthetic Oil - Flame Trap 200 1989

Still need the flame trap, synthetic oil is just as flammable as conventional.

My flame trap has been spotless for over 100K, running just whatever-is-cheapest API SM oils.

Didn't Volvo stop using the flame trap on later white-blocks? Do intake manifold backfires no longer occur on modern FI setups?

Agreed. Using Mobil 1 since it came out (1976?) and using it in my 80s in my 240s flame trap cleaning is just not needed.

Yes: this prevents flashovers from the intake system reaching the crankcase. You will find that synthetic oil keeps the flame trap system very clean. I have not had to clean mine since switching to Mobil 1.

I've run Mobil1 for the last 100 000kms and never had to clean the flame trap or throttle body. Well worth it.
