exhaust manifold gaskets 900

The turbo makes it a more difficult job than in a NA engine.

The suggestion in the FAQ's is to use genuine Volvo exhaust manifold gaskets and I think it is a good tip. With the work involved and the poor quality of bargain gaskets I have always sprung for the Volvo set.

Be care of their orientation. The metal side of the gasket goes against the exhaust manifold and it is fairly easy to get them turned 180 degrees as well which will guarantee a leak.

The additional lines can be a challenge and you will want to have access from the bottom side. My suggestion is to take the time to put the car up and then get under it to see what you must get loose. Check to see that you have the proper tools to reach and loosen/tighten the necessary fastners before starting the job.

Clean up the opening where the oil return line goes into the block before installing it. I always add some RTV around the ring after I put it on the return line and once it is in the opening I add some more- they have a tendency to leak and the additional sealant seems to eliminate that.

This job can be a can of worms if you break off a stud. Don't force things. If you are going to replace the studs (which is recommended) soak them with BPBlaster for a very long time. This is after the manifold is off. It is difficult to get the penetrant to stay around the area where the stud meets the head, but you must. Gravity is not working with you when the head is on the engine. As silly as it sounds I would consider making a little reservoir using strip caulk or modeling clay to hold a puddle of penetrant at the base of the stud. Occasionally during the soaking process tap the ends of the studs with a hammer, this increases the probability of penetrant moving into where you need it.

Once a stud begins to move continue to apply penetrant and don't simply try to unscrew the stud if you meet resistance. Spray the stud and then screw it back in and then start to remove it again. In and out until it is out. All of this additional time and care is a good investment because a broken stud will cause great aggravation and considerable expense of time and money as it is not uncommon to have to pull a head and have broken studs removed by an automotive machine shop.
