Sure sounds like the classic failure mode of the bulb out sensor.
Large red round device plugged into the wires under the dash. Not sure where yours is in a 1992 but usually above the driver's knees. 1990 and later cars have the more involved panels that have to come off to access the area.
Remove the sensor and take off the cylindrical cover. In strong light perhaps with a magnifying glass you should be able to detect a bad solder joint. Simply reflow the solder joint and you should be back in the brake light business.
These sensors are expensive to replace with new and there are tons of them in parts cars if you don't want to solder yours.
