Pressure in steering reservoir S90-V90 1998

One day I noticed that power steering reservoir in my '98 V90 hissed as I opened the cap ( after a short run) and it relieved a lot of pressure. I have never seen this happen in my '91 740 . I looked the cap over and could not find a vent . Is this normal or do I have a defective cap and how should that cap function ? The steering rack will be replaced in the near future because of strong leak from the left side and I don´t want to ruin the new one !

This is not normal. We have an S90 and a 960 and I have never had any pressure under the cap when I removed it, or for that matter any other vehicle.

The only time I had something similar happen once when my Ford truck was in for repairs at the dealership and they had to push it around without the engine running. While turning the steering wheel with the engine off, it built up enough pressure to blow the PS cap off the reservoir. They did not notice it and once the repairs were made I drove it home only to find a huge mess under the truck and under the hood.

Any idea what may cause the pressure inside the reservoir ? As I mentioned there is a leak from the left side of the rack and I must add fluid daily. What is the meaning of the spring inside the cap ? Has is something to do with the "ventilation" of the reservoir ? My 740 has no no spring in the cap.

I have run power steering pumps before (but not the these Volvos) without the caps on and at idle, no fluid boils out. At higher than idle rpm I'm sure it would without a cap.

The reason the cap blew off my old pickup was because when they were turning the wheel, they were forcing fluid into the reservoir and the pump wasn't running so no fluid was being removed from the reservoir to fill the space vacated by the fluid forced into the reservoir. It had to go somewhere so it blew the cap off.

I would image that the spring on the cap is a pressure relief mechanism.

Yeah, I think that the spring has something to do with the pressure relief but how it really works is a mystery for me because I can´t understand how the reservoir can breath while there is no hole in the cap. I am afraid that the pressure can ruin the seals in the new steering rack and it will leak, too. Is it harmfull to drill a tiny hole to the cap so the pressure can come out ? What do you think ?

I haven't looked at the cap, but if you think it's mafuntioning, then I'd get a new one. I wouldn't drill a hole. It's made that way for a reason.

In this link http://picasaweb.google.fi/takapotkukartano/Servo there are three pictures of the cap. Anyway, I allready sent email to local Volvo dealer and asked is it possible to buy only the cap or is it necessary to buy the whole reservoir. And is there somekind of pressure management system built in that reservoir or cap.
